The Cognitive Tradeoff Hypothesis

Wankeroo
Wankeroo

I don't agree with a trade off. I think this is a change in how memories are made. When there are less interpretations of an event it is easier to remember/organize. The brain doesn't make memories arbitrarily. You barely remember unimportant things or dreams. It's just the cost of semantics - not real estate.

Did most of the people in the comments miss the parts where Matsuzawa said the research was still young and that his idea of the language-memory trade-off was only a theory and not fact? He was never making bold claims, and the research has to happen slowly in order to be accurate. He hasn't always had the opportunity to study these magnificent creatures in this kind of pseudo-open environment. Yes any one can become great at the pattern, but there's a threshold/plateau of learning involved. He's interested in that threshold, and that takes time, and also takes willing participants -- hence the optionality of it.

Okay but after 20 minutes (end of the video) I still know the position of the first 1,2,3 you showed me. Does the monkey know this as well? If I were raised doing these tests, like Ayumu I'm sure I could do this stuff as well. Also did anyone notice how he kept discouraging Michael? As if he wanted him to score lower.

There is still no any evidences that human came from monkey, that just theory. And the theory can be a lie. My argument is if we came from chimpanzees then how come those gigantic humans who's height was 5-6 metres where they come from? There is many archaeological evidences about giant people.

I would have been able to ace the 9 digit test and take less time than Michael to memorize them. Even the .5 second one after doing it long enough I would prob be able to get at least the first 5 or 6 maybe on most of them and get all 9 like once or twice..

I wonder if humans naturally look around the number field trying to identify the numbers in order (taking longer to see them all), but the chimps look at them holistically or out-of-order, allowing them to spot-memorize the field faster before clicking them in the right order when doing the input. I mean, the chimps obviously understand the concept of the order of the symbols, but I wonder to which degree we are hobbled by our fluency in such systems' orderliness -- like how people who say the words in their heads read more slowly than those who don't mentally vocalize, but most people can't help but do it.

actually i could do that quite fast (the first one). The second one I'd draw a mental line of the number sequence (which was faster than Michael's times but slower than the chimp). I believe with training humans can do it just as fast as the chimps. Humans are able to do very difficult things with a bit of dedication and training. Still very interesting that chimps can do it that fast

An hypothesis isn't a fact. Trade-offs occur in many situations for humans which is a normal survival response to physical trauma for example. Being born without hands, people adapt to use their toes. If I competed against a woman who'd been using her toes to live, I'd surely look like a fool too. With practice though, I'd create new pathways in my brain as well as the right muscles and ligaments etc, and maybe achieve a good outcome. Though survival is a far greater motivation than competition.

I don't mean to be rude, but being a pianist I think that I do have that visual memory needed to be able to scan off the 9 digits in 0,5 seconds, just like I scan off the notes in front of me when I lift the eyes up for 0,5 seconds before looking down at my fingers again while playing the piano. You have to take a mental snapshot of what you see, and NOT memorize each number's position, I bet that's the trick to succeed. I wish I could try that test one day, I really think I could prove that humans can also manage to do it. And since I could prove that a Human could beat the monkey, that theory is not valid any more. We also forget that just as the Humans, through a very long process with many steps, evolved into modern smart humans, the apes also evolved into other species, that's why there are different kind of apes, for instance. Our common ancestor, was neither a human nor an ape. So please don't think of that common ancestor as being an ape. No living ape will ever evolve into a human, Evolution has closed that door for eternity.

I wonder if hand-eye coordination isn t linked with that short-term memory, meaning the reflexes needed for acrobatics? Look how fast that chimp doesn t only remember but also keys in the sequense... something we didn t need to that extent anymore and indeed traded off for analytic and associative thought, or abstraction in order to project one s self in time and distance, rather than having one s life hanging on a limb in immediate surroundings, not venturing too far outside a close-at-hand maze of branches for safety, as long as one could navigate it as fast and surely as the eye sees it... this added to the ability for team cooperative work obviously. Besides, I know that people from oral cultures have amazing memories, so it s not just about talking, in my humble opinion. Well, just a thought. I love observing animals - became a safari guide at some point for that very purpose!! what goes on in those heads, right?!

Vor 4 Tage

That is what Darwin meant by "fit". The word "fit" in its modern sense (being physically fit) was not used in the 19th century. Rather, it was used in the sense of something being fit for a specific situation. When Darwin wrote about the "survival of the fittest", he meant to say "survival of the most adaptable". It was only social darwinists among the Nazis during the 1920s and 1930s who claimed that "fittest" meant strongest. Either they simply didn't know they were wrong or they were being deliberately deceptive. I'm guessing the latter.

You can memorize a name or something MUCH better if you say it out loud a few times, instead of just looking at it. What it isn't said in this video is that we NEED a very good short term memory SOUND. Thats why you can repeat a long string of numbers but not if you just see them
